Defective render is one of the most common causes of penetrating damp — and the wrong render creates damp where there was none. We specify and carry out render and plaster work as part of a building's moisture management.
When render is the problem
Render fails in ways that are easy to see and easy to misread:
Cracking — hairline crazing through to structural cracking, allowing water directly into the substrate
Blown or hollow sections — render that's lost its key, usually found by tapping rather than by eye
Sulphate attack — expansion and cracking where sulphates in the masonry react with cement render
Cement render on solid walls — traps moisture in a wall that needs to breathe, and is a frequent cause of internal damp in older property
Bridged DPC — render carried down over the damp proof course, giving moisture a direct route past it
Failed coatings — sealants and waterproof paints applied over damp render, holding moisture in
Replastering after damp proofing
The replastering is what makes a chemical damp proof course work. Get it wrong and the DPC is irrelevant — salts continue to migrate, the finish blows, and the guarantee is worthless.
We replaster to PCA standards: correct mix and additives, correct height above the treated course, correct sequence and drying times, and no gypsum where it doesn't belong. Where a breathable specification is more appropriate, we'll say so.
Specialist Render Systems
External render repair and renewal — cracked, blown, hollow or delaminating render, failed pebbledash, sulphate attack and moisture trapped behind sealed coatings. We cut out and make good, or strip and re-render where the substrate demands it.
Breathable lime render for solid wall and traditionally-built properties, where cement render prevents the wall drying and drives moisture inwards.
Through-coloured and thin-coat systems, silicone and acrylic renders, monocouche and traditional sand and cement.
Full reinstatement — hack off, beads, plastering, skirtings and making good, so the job is finished properly rather than handed back to another trade.
